The Reencle's activated carbon filter is what separates it from composting methods that require outdoor placement or odor management. As long as the filter is functioning, processing meat, fish, dairy, and cooked food produces no detectable odor outside the unit. When the filter degrades, you'll notice — and replacement is the fix.
This guide covers when to replace, how to do it, what to buy, and how to extend filter life.

How the Filter Works
The Reencle uses an activated carbon (charcoal) filter in its ventilation system. As air cycles through the unit during the composting process, it passes through the filter before being exhausted. Activated carbon is highly porous — its microscopic surface area traps volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odor-causing gases before they exit the unit.
This is why the Reencle can process meat, fish, and dairy indoors without odor. The aerobic decomposition process generates far fewer odor compounds than anaerobic breakdown, and the filter captures what remains.
Over time, the activated carbon becomes saturated — its pores fill with trapped compounds and it can no longer absorb more. At that point, odors begin escaping, which is the clearest sign that replacement is due.
When to Replace the Filter
Recommended Replacement Schedule
Light use (0.5 kg/day or less)
Replacement Interval
Every 6 months
Standard use (0.5–1 kg/day)
Replacement Interval
Every 4–6 months
Heavy use (near daily capacity)
Replacement Interval
Every 3–4 months
The replacement interval depends on how much the filter is working — heavier use means more volatile compounds to absorb, which saturates the carbon faster.
Signs It's Time to Replace
Odor escaping the unit — the most reliable indicator. If you notice a composting smell during normal operation (not when the lid is opened), the filter is likely saturated. A faint smell when briefly opening the lid is normal; persistent odor when the unit is closed and running is the signal.
Visible filter degradation — if you can see the filter, look for darkening, compression, or visible buildup. Fresh activated carbon is typically black but uniform; degraded filters may look compressed or uneven.
Performance decline without other cause — if the microbial culture is healthy (normal processing speed, correct moisture) but you're noticing odor, the filter is the first place to check.
What's NOT a Filter Issue
- Odor when opening the lid during active processing — normal
- Odor during harvest — normal (compost material is exposed)
- Odor immediately after adding a large amount of strongly odorous material — temporary, usually resolves within hours
How to Replace the Filter
Filter replacement takes under two minutes.
Step 1: Turn off and unplug the unit. Always unplug before accessing internal components.
Step 2: Locate the filter compartment. The filter is located in the ventilation section of the unit — check your model's user manual for the exact location (it varies slightly between the Prime, Gravity, and Gravity Pro).
Step 3: Remove the old filter. The filter slides or lifts out of its housing. No tools required. Dispose of the used filter in regular waste — activated carbon filters are not recyclable through standard channels.
Step 4: Insert the new filter. Place the replacement filter in the same orientation as the original. Most filters have a directional indicator.
Step 5: Plug in and restart. Normal operation resumes immediately after replacement.
Where to Buy Replacement Filters
Replacement filters are available directly from Reencle:

Use only Reencle-specified filters for your model. Third-party filters may have different dimensions or carbon density and may not perform equivalently. Using the wrong filter can affect both odor control and airflow.
Buying tip: purchasing a second filter at the same time as your first replacement means you'll have one ready when the current one needs changing — no waiting for shipping when you need it.
How to Extend Filter Life
Don't add excessive liquid. Liquid-heavy inputs (soups, broths, very wet food) increase moisture in the unit's airflow, which can reduce filter efficiency faster. Drain excess liquid before adding.
Maintain the microbial culture. A healthy, active culture processes food faster and produces fewer volatile compounds. A struggling culture (too wet, too dry, or depleted) generates more undecomposed organic matter — and more compounds for the filter to handle. Keep the culture healthy and the filter lasts longer.
Use the unit regularly. Intermittent use (running for a week, then leaving unused for a month) doesn't extend filter life significantly and can affect the microbial culture. Consistent daily or near-daily use keeps the system working as designed.
Avoid non-food items. Chemicals, cleaning products, or very heavily salted food can damage or saturate activated carbon faster than organic food material.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What happens if I don't replace the filter? The unit continues composting normally — the filter affects odor control, not the composting process itself. You'll notice increasing odor during operation. The longer you delay, the more saturated the filter becomes, and eventually it won't absorb meaningfully at all.
Can I clean the filter instead of replacing it? No. Activated carbon cannot be effectively regenerated at home. Industrial carbon regeneration requires high-temperature treatment not possible with household equipment. Washing or drying the filter does not restore its absorption capacity. Replace rather than attempt to clean.
How do I know which filter fits my model? The Reencle Prime, Gravity, and Gravity Pro use model-specific filters. Check the model name on the bottom of your unit and purchase the corresponding replacement. When in doubt, contact Reencle support with your model number.
My unit is new and I already notice odor — is the filter defective? A new unit in its first few days may produce slightly more odor as the microbial culture establishes. This typically resolves within a week. If odor persists beyond two weeks on a new unit, contact Reencle support — a filter issue in a new unit would be a warranty matter.
How long does the filter last in storage? Unused filters in sealed packaging remain effective for approximately 1–2 years. Store in a cool, dry location away from strong odors — activated carbon can absorb ambient compounds from its environment even before use.
