Most approaches to establishing a new garden bed start with destruction: strip the sod, till the soil, kill the existing vegetation with herbicides or repeated cultivation. These approaches work, but they're labor-intensive, they disturb the soil ecosystem, and they often result in months of weed pressure as the disturbed soil releases its seed bank.
Sheet mulching — sometimes called lasagna gardening for its layered construction — is a fundamentally different approach. Instead of removing what's there, you build on top of it. Cardboard kills the existing vegetation by blocking light and disrupting gas exchange; layers of organic material above the cardboard decompose slowly, creating rich new topsoil; and by the following planting season, you have a productive garden bed where lawn or weeds used to grow.
No tilling. No herbicides. No sod removal. And because you're adding organic matter to the surface rather than mechanically disrupting the soil, the underground ecosystem — earthworms, fungal networks, soil microorganisms — is protected rather than destroyed.
For gardeners who want to expand their growing space, reclaim lawn, or establish beds in challenging areas, sheet mulching is one of the most productive and ecologically sound techniques available.
The Concept: How Sheet Mulching Actually Works
Sheet mulching works through several simultaneous mechanisms:
Light exclusion: Cardboard, when laid flat and overlapping, blocks almost all light from reaching the existing vegetation below. Most plants — including most lawn grasses and many weeds — cannot survive extended light exclusion. Within 4–8 weeks, the vegetation beneath the cardboard dies.
Gas exchange disruption: A tight cardboard layer also significantly reduces oxygen exchange at the soil surface, further stressing plants and roots below.
Slow decomposition from above: The organic materials layered above the cardboard decompose over time, creating new topsoil. This process is mediated by the same microbial communities and soil organisms that drive natural soil formation — it's just accelerated by the concentrated supply of organic matter.
Earthworm activity: Earthworms are strongly attracted to the decomposing cardboard layer and the organic materials above it. They migrate up from the existing soil and begin processing the organic layers, creating channels and casting that dramatically improve soil structure and fertility.
Root penetration: As the cardboard softens and degrades (typically 4–6 months), roots from plants above penetrate through it and into the original soil. The result is a continuous soil column from the new topsoil through the decomposed cardboard into the existing ground.
The net effect over a growing season: dead lawn grass, decomposed cardboard, and layered organic materials transform into a productive planting zone with soil structure significantly better than the original lawn.
Materials: What You Need and Where to Get It
The layering approach allows for flexibility in materials, which is part of what makes sheet mulching so practical. Most of the components can be sourced for free or at low cost.
The Cardboard Base Layer
What you need: Plain corrugated cardboard boxes, flattened. Avoid cardboard with heavy ink printing, glossy surfaces, or plastic tape (brown packing tape is fine; remove labels where possible).
How much: Enough to cover your entire bed area with 2-layer coverage and 6-inch overlaps at seams. For a 100-square-foot bed, estimate 150–175 square feet of cardboard to account for overlaps.
Where to get it: Appliance stores, liquor stores, moving companies, and large retailers (Costco, Home Depot) regularly have surplus cardboard. Most will give it away freely.
Key detail: Overlaps are essential. Weeds are opportunistic — a 4-inch gap in your cardboard becomes a weed corridor. Overlap seams by at least 6 inches, and run seams perpendicular to one another in the second layer if you're doing two layers.
Nitrogen Layers (Greens)
What it provides: Nitrogen for the microbial decomposition process and eventual plant nutrition.
Common nitrogen materials: - Fresh grass clippings (avoid clippings from lawns treated with herbicide within the last 3 mowings) - Vegetable and fruit scraps - Coffee grounds - Fresh plant trimmings and deadheaded flowers - Seaweed or kelp (if available near coast) - Well-aged manure (chicken, cow, horse — aged to reduce pathogens and prevent nitrogen burn) - Compost (itself an excellent nitrogen and microbial layer)
Layer thickness: 2–4 inches per green layer.
Carbon Layers (Browns)
What it provides: Structure, carbon for microbial metabolism, and bulk for the new topsoil.
Common carbon materials: - Straw (not hay — hay contains weed seeds; straw should be seed-free) - Dried autumn leaves (shredded preferred — whole leaves can mat and shed water) - Wood chips (avoid fresh chips from diseased wood; chips from deciduous trees are preferred) - Shredded newspaper (avoid glossy inserts) - Dried plant stalks, shredded
Layer thickness: 3–6 inches per brown layer.
Compost: The Key Working Layer
Finished compost is the single most important material in a sheet mulching system. It does multiple jobs: it provides microbial inoculant to jump-start decomposition throughout all layers; it contributes nutrients directly available to plant roots; and as the top layer, it provides the growing medium for planting.

Final Mulch Layer
Wood chips or straw: 3–4 inches on top. This final mulch layer serves multiple purposes: it retains moisture, suppresses weed establishment from the top, moderates soil temperature, and contributes carbon as it slowly decomposes.
The Layering Sequence
The standard sheet mulching build, from bottom to top:
Layer 1 (bottom): Water Before placing cardboard, water the existing vegetation thoroughly. Moist material underneath the cardboard decomposes faster, and earthworms are attracted to moisture. If working in dry conditions, water the ground to a depth of 3–4 inches.
Layer 2: Cardboard Lay flattened cardboard directly on the existing vegetation. Overlap seams by 6 inches. Wet the cardboard thoroughly as you lay it — wet cardboard degrades faster and is harder to blow away. Extend cardboard 12 inches beyond your intended bed edges to prevent grass from creeping in from the margins.
Layer 3: First nitrogen layer (greens) 2–4 inches of green material directly on top of the cardboard. Compost, grass clippings, kitchen scraps, or aged manure. Water this layer well.
Layer 4: First carbon layer (browns) 3–4 inches of straw, wood chips, or shredded leaves. Water well.
Layer 5: Second nitrogen layer Repeat nitrogen layer. If you have compost, this is a good place for another application — 1–2 inches of compost mixed with or placed beneath another nitrogen layer.
Layer 6: Second carbon layer 3–4 inches of straw or leaves.
Layer 7: Compost working layer 2–4 inches of finished, cured compost. This is the layer where you'll plant transplants immediately, or where seeds will eventually germinate. The quality of this layer directly determines what you can grow in year one.
Layer 8 (top): Final mulch 3–4 inches of wood chips or straw. Pull this back when planting; replace between plants.
Total depth: A well-built sheet mulch bed should be 12–18 inches of organic material above the existing ground. This seems like a lot, but the material compresses and settles dramatically — by planting season, you'll have 6–10 inches of workable material, which is sufficient for most annual vegetables and deep enough for root crops with a bit of additional amendment.
Timing: When to Build Your Bed
Fall is optimal. Building your sheet mulching bed in fall (October–November in most of North America) gives it the entire winter and early spring to decompose. By late April or early May, the cardboard has fully softened, the organic layers have settled and begun breaking down, and the bed is ready for spring planting.
Fall-built beds also benefit from: - Freeze-thaw cycles that break down cardboard and organic materials faster - Earthworm activity through mild winter periods - Moisture from rain and snow that keeps the layers decomposing
Spring building: Possible, but with important caveats. A spring-built bed (March–April) will still have intact cardboard and partially decomposed layers by planting time 4–8 weeks later. You can plant directly into the top compost layer, but root penetration into the lower layers will be limited until summer. Spring builds work well for transplants placed into deep compost pockets; they're less ideal for direct seeding or root crops.
Summer building: Works for fall plantings or for establishing a bed for the following year. The heat of summer accelerates decomposition, but moisture management is more demanding.
What to Plant in Year-One Sheet Mulch Beds
Not all plants thrive in newly established sheet mulch beds, particularly in spring builds where decomposition is still active.
Best performers in year-one beds: - Squash and zucchini: large root systems, vigorous growth, thrive in high-organic-matter conditions - Pumpkins: same characteristics as squash - Tomatoes and peppers: transplants placed in pockets of well-finished compost perform excellently - Cucumbers: respond well to high-fertility, high-moisture conditions - Annual herbs: basil, cilantro, dill - Salad greens: lettuce, arugula, kale — in the top compost layer
More challenging in year-one beds: - Root vegetables (carrots, parsnips): require uniform, unobstructed soil — year-two beds perform significantly better for these - Perennials: planting perennials in a bed that's still actively settling is possible but less reliable than planting in year two
Year two onwards: A well-established sheet mulch bed, with another top-dress of compost each season, becomes one of the most productive beds in the garden. The organic matter has decomposed, earthworm activity has created excellent structure, and the soil profile has depth and fertility.
Maintaining and Expanding Sheet Mulch Beds
Annual top-dressing: Each fall or spring, add 1–2 inches of finished compost to the top of the bed. This replaces organic matter lost to decomposition and maintains the bed's fertility and structure. Home-produced compost — whether from an electric composter or a pile — goes directly onto the bed surface and is incorporated by earthworms.
Mulch renewal: Replenish wood chip or straw mulch each season. 2–3 inches maintained between plants reduces weeds, retains moisture, and continues contributing organic matter as it breaks down.
Expansion: To expand the bed into adjacent lawn, simply extend the cardboard layer at the edges and top with fresh organic materials. The existing bed provides the biological community that accelerates decomposition in the expansion zone.
Sheet mulching is one of the most powerful and accessible techniques in regenerative gardening. It builds soil rather than mining it, protects soil biology rather than disrupting it, and produces results that improve year over year. The upfront material investment — a few hours and a truckload of organic matter — pays dividends in soil quality for a decade or more.
