A Guide for EASY WINTER COMPOSTING

And avoid methane emissions through composting with Reencle!

Composting is nature’s way of recycling. It is one of the most powerful actions we can take to reduce our trash, address climate change, and build healthy soil. Composting is pretty easy in the summertime. The weather is warm, and there's a bunch of soft, green stuff that breaks down quickly when you mix it with twiggy cuttings. But Composting in Winter? We found that a lot of customers of Reencle worry about composting in Winter. The temperature at the core of your heap can drop to the point where decomposition stops altogether. Most likely your stream of compostable kitchen waste won’t diminish because of freezing temperatures and snow on the ground. The good news? You can totally keep the composting game strong during winter and you can even kick off your composting journey for the first time in the chillier months.

We have compiled a comprehensive guide that addresses these topics:

a. What makes Composting in Winter Hard?

While things slow down a bit when it's cold, composting doesn't totally stop, except when everything in the compost pile is frozen solid. What’s most important factor for winter composting? It’s Temperature. The slowdown of composting in colder temperatures is primarily influenced by the activity of microorganisms responsible for decomposition.

While things slow down a bit when it's cold, composting doesn't totally stop, except when everything in the compost pile is frozen solid. What’s most important factor for winter composting? It’s Temperature. The slowdown of composting in colder temperatures is primarily influenced by the activity of microorganisms responsible for decomposition.

b. How does Low Temperature affect Winter Composting?

Now we know Temperature matters. Let’s see how low temperature in winter affects composting:

1. Microbial Activity: Microorganisms drive the decomposition process. In warmer temperatures, these microbes are more active and can break down organic matter more efficiently. As temperatures drop, their activity slows down. 2. Metabolic Rate: Microorganisms have a metabolic rate that is influenced by temperature. In colder conditions, their metabolic processes slow down, reducing their ability to break down organic materials into compost. 3.Water Content:Cold temperatures can lead to freezing, affecting the water content in the compost pile. Microorganisms require water for their metabolic processes, and freezing can limit their access to water, further slowing down decomposition. 4. Availability of Oxygen:Proper aeration is essential for composting. In colder weather, the compost pile may become compacted or frozen, reducing the availability of oxygen. This can hinder aerobic microbial activity, which is crucial for efficient composting.

c. What are the tips?

● Know What You Can Compost

You can maintain consistency in your winter composting collection, incorporating compostable kitchen scraps such as fruit peels, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds with paper filters, tea leaves, and tea bags without staples or stickers. Eggshells are also a great addition to boost compost. However, remember to avoid items that will slow and create odor on your composting like dairy products and non-organic materials in your collection.

● Blend in Garden Trimmings

Maintaining a proper balance of nitrogen-rich (green) and carbon-rich (brown) ingredients is crucial for effective composting. Given that kitchen scraps tend to be high in nitrogen, it's essential to supplement them with carbon sources from your yard, such as straw, dried leaves, and plant debris.

● Monitor Temperature

Winter composting relies significantly on temperature. Rapid decomposition occurs when temperatures range between 90 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

● Manage Moisture

In areas with frequent rain and snow, regulating moisture becomes crucial. Traditional compost piles may struggle with this, as the moisture can seep into the ground and be absorbed by the compost. An alternative is using a sealed compost tumbler, preventing issues with rain and snowmelt. However, even with tumblers, some water absorption can occur, so it's important to incorporate sufficient dry leaves to counteract any excess moisture.
