Today's Experiement: Sanfrancisco bay Coffee pods
Are Coffee Pods Compostable?
Accroding to San Francisco Bay Coffee, their OneCUP™ pods are BPI® certified compostable in a commercial or industrial composting facility, which means that with the right balance of heat, moisture and oxygen, they will safely decompose to nourish the soil.. However, we wanted to give it a go in Reencle, a household indoor composter, see whether they can be decomposed in a household unit or not.
It is stated that OneCUP™ pods are made of planted-based, sustainable and compostable materials. (All materials that can be shaped with heat are technically considered plastics, but San Francisco Bay Coffee exclusively use renewable plastics and avoid any petrochemical-based plastics).
OneCUP™ pods are consists of Paper lidding, plant-based-ring, mesh filter paper. We wanted to find out will Reencle decompose OneCUP™ pods from San Francisco Bay Coffee?
How did it go?
We tested it with 2 coffee pods, each one of them weighed 15.9g.
On the first day, we noticed nothing much has been changed. However, after 48 hours, we noticed pretty much everything except plant based ring is decomposed.
We ended up with the result of 7.9g after 48 hours but considering the attacehd compost, we believe the test has gone successfully.
